It is time to look for an alternatives to the Mobile Ipad Craze. There is a new player in town and he is here to stay. In just the last two weeks there has been article after article released about the ChromeBook. At the MACUL conference I went to a session on iPad vs Chromebook and every day after I went to this session. Google has gained more traction. For both My sons birthday I bought them Nexus tablets. You can not pry these devices from there fingers. They have became a appendage to them. Today is just one more of those moments of reflection after reading this commentary from Kevin Hogan in a trade magazine. iPad and apple is in for a battle with a big contender. Also Microsoft my want to look over there shoulder also as the upstart that Google created is becoming a disruptive innovation that will displace both in the changing world of education.
Kevin Hogan wrote "In my decidedly non-scientific survey of classroom device adoption, a.k.a. my news alerts, it seems that the iPad may be in peril as the favorite district implementation of 2014. Maybe I should switch search engines for research, but Google Chromebooks seem to be making a Play (all puns intended). Google Play for Education this week announced a new aspect of their content distribution strategy—digital books. Following the teacher friendly "pick-your-own" app and video announcements last fall, the company has partnered with several publishers, including Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Harper Collins, Penguin, and Random House, to offer a virtual library service. Students are lent access to digital books for a set period of days during the course of the semester through a reader app—you can play with it here. When the course is over, the books evaporate. Forget about the devices for a minute and look squarely at the software platform underneath. Google attempts to create enterprise-level systems created specifically for education at both a district and classroom level is intriguing and should give pause to knee-jerk iPad purchases."

Introducing ClassBadges - A tool to help motivate young learners
ClassBadges is a free, online tool where teachers can create badges for students who have recently completed a certain accomplishment. These badges are customizable for specific subjects, to track the progress of class projects or for school awards. The software offers hundreds of designs to choose from, and it’s a great way to motivate your students. The teacher can create a private personal account for each student, so they can keep track of which badges they have already earned. I believe this can be a great motivational tool for the younger school grades.
Can computers replace a classroom teacher
"If you think you could be replaced by a computer, then you probably should be," said Rick Ogston. "It really isn't about replacing teachers, it's a false argument. It's about re-purposing them and very strategically, because the role of the teacher changes in a digitally leveraged environment."
I think this is a thought provoking statement. I believe that there is a great fear by teachers that somehow this technology will replace them. I see this in a different way. I see this empowering students to take a greater role in their educational experience and for the teacher to become the facilitator of learning. As the Chinese say in there proverb "A teacher will appear when the student is ready to learn."

The Importance of Assessment in Backward Design
The primary starting point for backward design is to become familiar with the standards/outcomes for the grade level and curriculum being taught. The second part of curriculum planning with backward design is finding appropriate assessments. It can be difficult for "traditional" educators to switch to this model because it is hard to conceptualize an assessment before deciding on lessons and instruction. The idea is that the assessments (formative and/or summative) should meet the initial goals identified.
Wiggins and McTighe (2008) also utilize the "WHERE" approach during the assessment stage of the process.[8]
- W stands for students knowing where they are heading, why they are heading there, what they know, where they might go wrong in the process, and what is required of them.
- H stands for hooking the students on the topic of study.
- E stands for students exploring and experiencing ideas and being equipped with the necessary understanding to master the standard/outcome being taught.
- R stands for providing opportunities for students to rehearse, revise, and refine their work.
- E stands for student evaluation.

Driven by new digital technologies, the future of learning is increasingly interactive, individualized, and full of real-world experiences and information. Unfortunately, the average school has about the same connectivity as the average American home, but serves 200 times as many users, and fewer than 20 percent of educators say their school’s internet connection meets their teaching needs. And our teachers do not get enough training and support to integrate technology in their classroom and lessons, despite the fundamental and increasing importance of those skills.
Today, President Obama called on the Federal Communications Commission to take the steps necessary to build high-speed digital connections to America’s schools and libraries, ensuring that 99 percent of American students can benefit from these advances in teaching and learning.
